Handmade Book with Auratone Covers - Friday, January 31, 2014 (10:30-4:30) - $95 (+ $15 materials fee payable at the workshop)
Leather Buckled Book - Saturday, February 1, 2014 (10:30 - 4:30) - $95 (+ $15 materials fee payable at the workshop)
Handmade Book with Auratone Covers - In advance of the workshop, you'll send Barbara copies of your JPEG photo files, and she'll turn them into Auratones, a simple yet impressive process she developed for transforming black and white photos into gold-toned images reminiscent of vintage Daguerreotypes or tintypes. Any subject will work as long as there are some light areas in the images. The photos shown in the sample are of statuary on the front cover and tile work on the back cover. (If you prefer, these and others will also be available for you to use.)
On the day of the workshop, Barbara will give a live demonstration of the Auratone technique so that you can make them on your own and at your own pace in the future. In class, with Jeannine's instruction, you'll make a smallish book (3 1/2" x 4 1/2") that has an open spine, handmade paper for the inside pages, and your pre-processed Auratones decorating the front and back covers.
No previous bookbinding experience is necessary to create this sewn book, but those who have made books before will add some new techniques to their repertoire. All materials and tools are included, but if you prefer to use your own tools, please bring a thin awl, craft knife, small cutting mat, bone folder, pencil and scissors. Auratone kits will be available for purchase.
Leather Buckled Journal - There are few things more satisfying than making your own journal to write, draw, or collage in. With a humble piece of leather, some waxed linen thread and paper, we'll create this one-of-a-kind book measuring about 5" x 7" that's the perfect journal for a special trip, or just for sitting at your favorite coffee house. A buckle is one option for a closure – other options will be available. Not into leather? Vegans and vegetarians will have another similar, animal-free material to work with. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary, but this is also a great workshop for those with some bookbinding knowledge. All materials and tools are included. If you prefer to use your own tools, please bring a thin awl, Japanese push drill (optional, only bring it if you have one), craft knife, small cutting mat, bone folder, pencil and scissors.
Please bring a sack lunch...there's a fully equipped kitchen on site if you need to refrigerate or heat something up. There is also a Trader Joe's and a Ralphs supermarket in walking distance.
