Enso Flag 1
Enso Flag 1
The word ‘enso’ means circle in Japanese.
In Zen Buddhism, the Enso symbolizes many things: strength, the circle of life, connection, letting go of expectations, and the beauty in imperfection.
Perfectly imperfect: My Enso flags are made from upcycled teabags that have been boiled for sterilization but still retain traces of tea stain; also, aged rusted rebar, and rusted wire. Each flag is an original piece of art, and as such no two are alike. Imperfections such as small holes, uneven or torn edges, and ink spatter are intrinsic to the process. Being made from teabags, they are surprisingly strong yet still delicate and should be handled with care.
Flags measure approximately 3 1/2” by 5” and are accompanied by a length of waxed linen thread and a bronze gourd pin to facilitate hanging. Flags may be hung to float in front of a window for maximum transparency, on a hook or knob, anywhere they might benefit from a passing breeze, or simply on the wall as you would any piece of decorative art. Conducive to meditation, they add dimension to an altar or shrine. The final photo shows what a similar item looks like hanging in a variety of settings.
Warning: The Enso flag is not a toy. It is not intended for children, and it is not intended to be displayed in a child’s room. It is a piece of mixed media art created with ink, rusted elements, and small potentially sharp parts. It should be hung out of the reach of children.
